IRONMAN HAWAII - THE MYTH BEGINS
February 18, 1978: On the Hawaiian island of O'ahu, 15 athletes plunge into the Pacific waves to swim 3.86 km, bike 180 km, run 42.2 km. As the fastest athlete, Gordon Haller needs 11 hours and 47 minutes for the total of 226 kilometers (140.6 miles) and becomes the first IRONMAN in history.
12 months earlier: During an awards ceremony for a running competition, participants discuss which endurance athletes are the fittest athletes - runners or swimmers. One of them - Navy Cmdr. John Collins - also included the cyclists in the comparison and suggested combining three existing competitions on the Hawaiian island of O'ahu into a single race. These three competitions were: the 3.86 km Waikiki Rough Water Swim, the 180.2 km Around O'ahu Bike Race, and the 42.195 km Honolulu Marathon. In the end, it was Collins who justified the myth with one sentence:
"Whoever finishes first, we'll call him the IronMan."
A year later, the first IRONMAN in history took place, although it only officially bore this brand name and the "M-Dot" logo from 1982. Word of this extraordinary competition quickly got around in the endurance scene and in the years that followed drew significantly more athletes to the starting line. After only a few years, the race reached the capacity of the venue on the island of O'ahu. In 1981, Collins and his team decided to move the race to Kona on the Big Island. In the following year, the triathlon was also scheduled to be held in October (there were two Ironman races in 1982: February / October) and has had a permanent place at this location ever since.
