Hamburg Wasser Triathlon 2022, Tag 2: Olympische Distanz + Mixed Relay

Sunday, 07/10 - Competition day 2

On the second event day of the HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon Championship Series, the first starting signal for the Olympic distance was fired again on Sunday morning at 6:30 a.m.

One of the participants who wanted to be at the starting line on Hamburg's Jungfernstieg for the twentieth time on Sunday is Tagesschau announcer Thorsten Schröder , but a corona infection two weeks ago thwarted his plans. Nevertheless, he took the opportunity to come to the track as a spectator. "Of course it's a pity to have to let the series end and only be able to be there as a spectator this year, but I don't want to risk anything because of my qualification for the IRONMAN World Championship at the beginning of October," said Schröder during the race. “I had just discovered triathlon for myself when the HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon celebrated its premiere. Perfect for me to test my form at least once a year back then! I think it's great that we can have the race in the center of my city, it's something special to jump into the Alster and get out of the water right in front of the town hall and cycle and run there, which is also where I train and in come by everyday. All of this in front of the sports-loving people of Hamburg who are cheering us on. Great city, great race, great atmosphere – I have to take part in that every year and am happy to plan my vacation accordingly!”

Thrilling conclusion to the mixed relay

Valentin Wernz, Lisa Tertsch, Lasse Nygaard Priester and Laura Lindemann made up the German Mixed Relay team, which traditionally takes place as the final event on Sunday afternoon. An exciting format, in which four athletes from each of the 18 nations started on a super sprint distance . The athletes had to cover 300m in the small Alster before they started the 7km long bike course, a technically demanding course with many curves and turning points via Jungfernstieg, Neuer Jungfernstieg and Rathausmarkt, before the 1700m long running course for the relay change went to the town hall market.

The many thousands of spectators along the route were treated to an exciting race full of changes in leadership, in which neither the men who started first nor the women who followed were able to pull away. Only in the third lap was a group of six able to break away from the rest of the field bit by bit.

With a 10-second time penalty by Lisa Tertsch and another by Lasse Nygaard Priester, Laura Lindemann was the fourth starter of the German team and went full throttle from the start. After the swim she left the water in third place and gradually worked her way up to the leading Australian. On the running track, she courageously ran away from the front and in the end, after serving a time penalty, secured third place for the German team with a strong performance.

Conclusion and outlook for 2023

“It was great to see so many smiling faces today in this great weather. With a total of 5,800 participants between the ages of 13 and 84 and three exciting elite races, I am happy to draw a very positive event balance for us,” says Oliver Schiek, Managing Director of IRONMAN Germany GmbH, after the race. “As always, I would like to thank all employees, partners, volunteers and the authorities involved, without whom this event would not take place. Next year it will be world champion, we will go one step further with the World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships, which will take place from July 13th to 16th, 2023, and I am already looking forward to the coming year.”
