Glücksburg, August 1st, 2022 - Next weekend the German championships will be held on the long-distance triathlon as part of the OstseeMans. After two years of cancellation due to the pandemic, the popular race on the Flensburg Fjord is taking place again and brings the German elite of long-distance athletes to the starting line.
"Hawaii of the North"
"I'm incredibly proud that we received the go-ahead from the German Triathlon Union to organize this championship," says Reinhard Husen, initiator and race director of the OstseeMan, who adds in the same breath that he also sees great appreciation for his team, the has been at his side for many years. "In our start and finish area directly on the beach promenade, all participants are warmly welcomed and celebrated, just like on the routes themselves," Husen is convinced, who, as a long-time triathlete, knows the various venues and formats very well. "We've had two corona-related cancellations. But now we're getting started again: with the OstseeMan 2022."
Swimming in the open sea - the absolute supreme discipline for the athletes.
“Ironman Hawaii is known for its distinctive wind. We, on the other hand, have the Baltic Sea - and that is considered a real challenge, even among experienced triathletes. Because the natural force of the sea is unpredictable. With us, the starters get wind and waves included”.
Demanding routes
Anyone who expects a flat route profile on the northernmost long distance in Germany will be disappointed. Depending on the weather, you always have to be prepared for light waves when swimming in the open Baltic Sea . Then it goes on the bike on a 45-kilometer lap , which must be completed four times. The circuit is peppered with a few short, crisp ramps where you leave a few more grains in each lap. The final run has to be mastered six times as a 7-kilometer lap over the long distance. The round is quite varied, leads from the beach promenade inland towards Glücksburg old town and back to the beach path/promenade. But here, too, the runners can expect a wavy profile as soon as the course leaves the beach promenade. The course records are currently 8:24:11 hours for men (Till Schramm / 2019) and 9:12:03 hours for women (Jenny Schulz / 2019).
The long distance starts on Sunday, August 7th at 6:45 a.m. for the individual starters and at 6:55 a.m. for the relays.

OM113: the middle distance
In addition to the long-distance race, a OstseeMan half-distance race is also offered in Glücksburg. "We are reacting to the growing interest in the middle distance," emphasizes race director Husen. The middle distance starts at 9:15 a.m. in several waves.
Conclusion
It doesn't always have to be Ironman. The OstseeMan impresses with its family atmosphere paired with professional organization and a great atmosphere at the edge of the route. Highly Recommended.
