It's been almost two weeks since Jan Frodeno had to drop out of the CHALLENGE ROTH while in the lead. For him, the focus is clearly on the IRONMAN World Championships in Hawaii in October, for which Frodeno "sacrificed" a top result in Roth. How is he doing after the emotional DNF?
What happened?
Challenge Roth, July 3, 2022: Jan Frodeno and the later winner, Magnus Ditlev, determine the race in cycling and come together as a leading duo into the second transition zone. Frodeno immediately took the initiative and was able to gain valuable seconds on Ditlev in the first kilometer. Frodeno shows no signs of weakness. But what nobody suspects: Frodeno's injury to the right Achilles tendon is far from healed. After 2.2 kilometers on the running track, he suddenly stops and gives up the race at this point. After a partial tear in the tendon, Frodenos had to take a long break at the beginning of the season and was only able to train to a limited extent, and running training in particular had to suffer as a result. Challenge Roth was to be the big comeback.
"We have a pain scale of one to ten and I had to promise that I wouldn't exceed that level," said Frodeno shortly after his DNF. "I have to be honest enough that everything was fine, but the pain was too much... the tendon might be gone six out of ten. But the head eleven."
Everything for Kona 2022
Frodeno's overriding goal is the IRONMAN World Championships in Hawaii in October - here he has to be in top form at the starting line in order to be able to beat Blummenfeldt, Iden & Co. Therefore, there was an agreement in advance with his therapists, trainers and supervisors that he would stop the race if the pain increased so as not to jeopardize the preparation for Kona.
In the remaining 14 weeks until Hawaii, the full focus is on treating this injury and being fully resilient.
how is he now
Shortly after abandoning the race (on the same day), Jan Frodeno drove from Roth to Osnabrück to see an Achilles tendon specialist. The visit to his orthopedic surgeon there revealed that his Achilles tendon looks good and is in good shape, reports Frodeno himself on his >Instagram Account .
However, he's not quite ready to compete in a marathon or any kind of big effort. That's why they created a plan together to get 100% fit again in the next three to five weeks. His goal remains to win Kona 2022.
We hope for the best and keep our fingers crossed!
