Nach Radsturz: Jan Frodeno verletzt, Hawaii-Absage 2022

End of season: Jan Frodeno canceled his participation in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii in October. During a training accident on the bike a few weeks ago, the Olympic champion and three-time Hawaii champion sustained a hip injury that now requires multiple operations.

What happened?

From the hospital - supported on crutches - Frodeno gave a health update in a video message last Friday: A few weeks ago, as a result of a wheel fall that initially seemed harmless, he suffered bruises and abrasions in the hip area. However, this led to a deeper inflammation of the tissue (Morel-Lavallée lesion), which the DTU team doctor Dr. Casper Grim (Osnabrück) was diagnosed on Thursday - two to five surgical interventions can be expected for the treatment. This postpones Frodeno's dream of a fourth title in Hawaii by another year.

The 40-year-old had to accept injury-related setbacks throughout the 2022 season: persistent problems in the right Achilles tendon in particular forced him to cancel participation in the World Cup in St. George in the spring. At the CHALLENGE Roth on July 3rd he was running in pain, even had to stop the race while in the lead on the running course in order not to jeopardize the preparation for Hawaii ( > to the article ).

"Still Burning"

On August 18 he will be 41 years old and sees himself on the home stretch of his career. Despite the setbacks, Frodeno remains confident. In his video message, he emphasizes that he is still passionate about sport and success - the passion is still there. But first it says:

Time to push pause. reset. And start again.
